André Le Nôtre did not publish any treatises on his art. Only after his death were the French garden style and technology codified in print in this seminal compendium, which appeared in numerous editions and translations between 1709 and 1764. An art connoisseur and naturalist, Dezallier d’Argenville also contributed hundreds of articles on gardening and hydraulics to the Encyclopédie (1751–1772).
