The collection consists of the extensive family papers of John Lehmann. Included are
thousands of letters to him from friends and literary associates, such as E. M.
Forster, Edith Sitwell, Harold Nicolson, William Plomer, Stephen Spender, Christopher
Isherwood, Demetrios Capetanakis, and Alexis Rassine, and correspondence and papers
of family members going back to the 1800s, including his grandparents, Frederick and
Nina Chambers Lehmann, his parents, Rudolf and Alice Lehmann, and his sisters,
Beatrix, an actress, and Rosamond, an author. Also present are autograph and
typescript manuscripts for poems, articles, speeches, reviews, broadcast talks, and
drafts for his autobiography; papers relating to the Hogarth Press and New Writing; many diaries and notebooks; business,
financial, and domestic account files; personal documents; juvenilia; photographs,
drawings, and paintings; memorabilia; amd printed matter.
