Kites From Physics to Fancy

on display in the

In Kites: An Historical Survey (1967), Clive Hart writes “During the two and a half thousand years of its existence the kite has proven itself to be a most remarkably versatile technological invention.  It has been used for carrying men, for fishing, for towing anything from torpedoes to carriages, for providing gunnery targets, for signaling, for raising telephone wires and radio antennae, for aerial photography….” This exhibition, however, focuses on the more innocent aspects of the kite's history as a children's pastime in Britain and America during the last three hundred years.  The Cotsen Children's Library would like to thank the Drachen Foundation for its generous support of this exhibition, which was originally on display in the Cotsen gallery March-August 2009.
