How can I access Princeton University Library special collections?
Princeton University Library welcomes all researchers to its rare books and special collections reading rooms. Special collections readers in the Firestone Library, Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, Marquand Library and East Asian Library are required to create a Special Collections Research Account, and you may register for an account via the following URL:
After you have registered for a research account, you may select material in preparation for your visit using the request tabs located next to individual box, folder, and catalog records in the Main Catalog and Finding Aids. For a list of special collections database and resources, see:
Please note: Some special collections material is housed in our off-site shelving facility (ReCAP) and must be requested at least three weekdays in advance to make certain the material will be available upon your arrival.
After registering, Princeton Faculty, Students, and Staff use their Princeton IDs for access to the reading rooms. Patrons not affiliated with Princeton must complete the register process on their first visit in the Library Privileges office located in the lobby of the Firestone Library. Please have available your academic ID (or valid photo ID, such as a driver's license incorporating a picture or a passport). Notes must be taken in pencil, although laptops are permitted. Personal photocopiers and scanners are not allowed. You may bring a hand-held digital camera (no tripod or flash) and request permission to take photographs of select items for personal research purposes. Permission is granted on an item-by-item bases while you are viewing the material.
