Chile, Certificate of Award of the Order of Merit, Grand Official Grade, to General Erhard Milch, March 3, 1937
Chile, Certificate of Award of the Order of Merit, Grand Official Grade, to General Erhard Milch, Secretary to the Minister of the German Luftwaffe, March 3, 1937, signed by the President of the Republic, Arturo Alessandri, as Grand Master and by Gustavo Ross, Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Chancellor of the Order.
This certificate documents the historical relationship between Chile and the Third Reich, part of which included the involvement of German officers in the training of the Chilean Air Force. As is required by diplomatic protocol, this certificate of award was accompanied by one signed by the German head of state, the Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler, allowing Milch to accept such an honor from a foreign nation. After the war, Milch was tried at the Nuremberg Tribunals and sentenced to life imprisonment for War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity.
