NAUTICAL COLLECTION

  • A collection of about 400 books relating to ships and the sea with several logs and documents concerning whalers and other ships, given to the Library by F. Walter Armstrong, Jr. The collection was dispersed among the Library's general stack and rare book collections. Among the rare books are publications of the Golden Cockerel Press issued in limited editions, and a copy of [Edward] Barlow's Journal of His Life at Sea in King's Ships, East & West Indiamen & Other Merchantmen from 1659 to 1703. Transcribed from the Original Manuscript by Basil Lubbock, issued in 1934 in an edition of 100 copies [(EX) 99932.147].

    In 1958-59, the Library received from Dorsey Richardson a copy of the first edition of Nathaniel Bowditch's The New American Practical Navigator (Newburyport, 1802) [(Ex) 99952.204.11].
