Little Magazines, Post-1945

New York School. Beats. Black Mountain. Black Arts. San Francisco Renaissance. Berkeley Renaissance. British Poetry Revival. TISH. Umbra. Cambridge School. Ganglia. Language. These names define Princeton’s collection of post-1945 little magazines—and post-1945 Anglophone poetry, more generally. The collection includes college quarterlies, mimeographed newsletters, underground journals, one-shot reviews, poetry comics, broadsides, and much more.

  • The foundation for the collection is from the personal collection of Steven Clay, publisher of Granary Books and co-author of A Secret Location on the Lower East Side: Adventures in Writing, 1960–1980. Currently, there are more than 600 titles in the collection, most available in complete runs. The collection is still being developed—and over 100 titles are yet to be catalogued.  For more information on the formation and progress of the collection, please contact Professor Joshua Kotin.

  • The list below includes all the catalogued post-1945 Anglophone little magazines in Rare Books and Special Collections at Princeton's Firestone Library. Those titles followed by an asterisk represent magazines for which RBSC holds partial runs. To determine holdings of partial runs, search the Library Catalog.

Much material remains uncatalogued. Please check back for updates.

  • Archives of Form Magazine (C1489)

Form was an international magazine focused on concrete poetry and kinetic art. Three Cambridge-educated academics, Philip Steadman, Mike Weaver, and Stephen Bann, edited the magazine and produced ten issues from 1966 to 1969. The collection includes extensive correspondence between editors, subscribers, and contributors, along with editorial, financial, and administrative files spanning the entire existence of the magazine.

Tarasque Press: item 6899822q, Boxes 1-3

Tarasque Press was founded by Stuart Mills in 1964. With Simon Cutts, Mills edited Tarasque magazine (twelve issues, 1965–1971).  Cutts also edited the broadside periodical, Private Tutor (twelve issues, 1967–1970). The Tarasque Press archive contains all the publications of the press, including the magazines, as well as correspondence, maquettes, and manuscripts.

This collection is still in the process of being catalogued. For a collection checklist, see: Tarasque and Simon Cutts Poetry Archive Inventory.

  • Much of the post-1945 Little Magazine collection is housed off-site and must be requested in advance for use in the department's special collections reading room.  To register for a research account and to submit requests, see: Research Account Access.

Also of note, the Friends of the Princeton University Library offer short-term Library Research Grants to promote scholarly use of the research collections. For more information about the grants and application process, see: Library Research Grants
